Lecture Series on "Scoping Review&How to Develop a Research Career” was Successfully Held

At 9 am on June 4th in 2019, host by the Student Work Department of Central South University and the Xiangya School of Nursing of Central South University and organized by the Nursing Branch of the Association of Young Scientists and Technicians of Central South University and the Graduate Association of Xiangya School of Nursing, a lecture series on "Scoping Review&How to Develop a Research Career was successfully held in the meeting room 714 in Xiaoqian Building at Xiangya New Campus.


Chaired by Professor Li Xianhong from Xiangya School of Nursing Central South University, the lecture was given by Maritta Valimaki, a professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, School of Nursing and at the University of Turku, the Department of Nursing Science, who is also a deputy director of the School of Nursing at HKPU, and chairman of the research committee with honarary appointments at the University of Tampere and the University of London (Social Care at T. Georges, London). She had rich experience in the fields of Health service Research, Health Technology and Outcome Research, Research Implementation, Evidence-Based Practice, Development of the Quality of the Care, and in User-Centered Care, especially in the fields of evidence-based nursing and mental health care. Professor Maritta Valimaki believes that improving lives through evidence-based nursing practice is the key to enhancing mental health care worldwide. Her teaching philosophy is based on the tenet that it is always better to be positive than critical. With this in mind, she strives to offer students respect, collaboration, motivation and encouragement. Presiding over more than 20 major projects, she is now working on mental health education and research development in Asia.

Professor Maritta began the introduction of scoping review by distinguishing it from  other 13 reviews of different categories. She emphasized the purpose and role of scoping review, asking her students to create research designs most suitable for their research purposes. After that, take as an example one of her published scoping reviews, she made a systematic introduction to the content and requirements of each part of a scoping review. Adopting an interactive teaching method allowing for in-depth analysis and open discussions, Professor Maritta helped her students acquire how to write scoping reviews.  

Finally, Professor Maritta shared her educational background and research experiences, stressing the necessity of clear long-term plans, self-confidence and academic confidence, the selection of quality research topics and efficient team work in their future academic research. At the end of the lecture, Professor Li Xianhong summarized the lecture, extending heartfelt gratitude to Professor Maritta for her brilliant presentation. The lecture was rounded off with warm applause.
