Xiangya School of Nursing of Central South University
Founded in 1911, Xiangya Nursing School of Central South University was set by Yale-China Association. It is one of the earliest institutions of nursing education in China. The School has trek through hundreds of years, coming from the “Yale-China Care School”. It has won its reputation and made much progress at the very good time of the reform and opening up.
Mature degree structure
In 2000, the Nursing science of Central South University was entitled by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to confer master's degree in nursing. In 2004, doctors in community health nursing are enrolled in the clinical medicine department, which is one of the first two doctoral degree programs in nursing in China. In 2011, nursing has been listed as a national first-class discipline, and the college is among the first group to be qualified of granting Doctor's degree. In 2012, it was enlisted as the Chinese first batch of the postdoctoral research stations in nursing.
Top discipline structure
In the 3rd and 4th China Discipline Ranking(CDR), nursing of Central South University ranked 4 and A+ separately. According to the 2014 Chinese University Discipline And Specialty Evaluation Report compiled by The Chinese Alumni Association, the nursing of Central South University ranked Chinese five-star discipline in 2014. In 2017 and 2018, nursing of Central South University was listed in the world's top 100. Nursing is the specialty of Hunan Province and a key discipline of the 12th Five-Year Plan.
High-quality teachers
With strong faculty and reasonable structure, the college has integrated the faculty of four First-class affiliated hospitals‘ teaching, scientific research and clinical practice resources, so as to form a high-quality teaching system of Xiangya Nursing School of Central South University. The school has 68 full-time teachers, among which are 27 professors (including chief nurse), 30 associate professors (including an associate nurse), 8 post-doctoral and doctoral supervisors and 42 master supervisors. Among the young teachers, there are 6 having finished their post-doctoral research, 4 conducting their post-doctoral studies and 34 doctors. The rest are studying for the doctoral degrees.
Abundant teaching resources
The college consists of five specialized departments, namely Basic Nursing Department, Humanistic Nursing Department, Clinical Nursing Department, Community Nursing Department and Midwifery Department. We also have a key laboratory of Hunan Province covering 1,700 m2, including the basic research laboratory for chronic venereal diseases, the community care laboratory, the laboratory for AIDS vulnerable groups, the psychological care research Center, and the humanistic care laboratory, with an investment of over 15.9 million yuan. The clinical nursing laboratory covers 9,230 square meters with an investment of nearly 70 million yuan. In addition, the college has more than a dozen clinical practice bases and community hospitals for students to horn their practical skills.
Extensive scientific research
The College has Hunan Women's and Children's Health and Development Research Center, Xiangya-Oceanwide Health Management Research Institute, Health Care Research Center of Central South University, Chronic disease Basic Research and Basic Management Research Center, Psychology of Nursing Research Center, and Health Improvement Research Center for vulnerable groups. Besides that, the school also focuses on six research fields: public health nursing and disease prevention and control, geriatric nursing and chronic disease management, mental health and psychological nursing, clinical nursing theory and technology, nursing management theory and practice, nursing ethics, and rule of law. In the past five years, the college has had 168 projects, including 19 international cooperation projects, 6 National Natural Science funds, 3 national social science funds, 2 doctoral programs funds of the Ministry of Education, more than 10 Natural science funds of Hunan Province, and nearly 100 projects of the Provincial Science and Technology Commission, the Provincial Education Department and the Provincial Health Department. Professors and students have published more than 1000 papers as the first author, among which 96 papers have been included in SCI/SSCI/EI. More than 50 national utility model patents have been granted while 7 textbooks for the 11th and 12th Five-Year Plans for the People’s Medical Publishing House and the Higher Education Publishing House. Besides, more than 50 textbooks and monographs for various majors and professions have also been published.
Extensive cooperation
The school has cooperated with Yale University, University of California, San Francisco, Washington University, University of Dundee and University of Toronto, Monash University, Flinders University, Kyushu University, Chiang Mai University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong for coalition training, scientific research cooperation and academic exchanges. From 2014 to 2018, more than 300 people participated in exchanges with famous universities in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
