At 10:30 am on June 3 in 2019, host by the Student Work Department of Central South University and the Xiangya School of Nursing of Central South University and organized by the Nursing Branch of the Association of Young Scientists and Technicians of Central South University and the Graduate Association of Xiangya School of Nursing, a lecture series on "Creating a Nursing Model with the Dignity of the Elderly as the Core” was successfully held in the meeting room 714 in Xiaoqian Building at Xiangya New Campus.

Presided over by Professor Feng Hui from our school, this lecture was given by Dr. Zhao Yuehong, a faculty from the Department of Geriatric Nursing at Japan University of Health Sciences and from the Graduate School of Nursing at International University of Health and Welfare. Her research interests are mainly focused on international health, nursing management, policy, geriatric nursing and psychiatric nursing.

Dr. Zhao Yuehong started this lecture by sharing some real-life cases of elder abuse in old people’s homes in China, which includes physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, financial/material exploitation and neglect. Elder abuse has led to dire consequences, even endangering the lives of elderly people in some cases. After that, she shared her views on geriatric nursing in elderly care facilities, which often feature the restriction of elderly people’s spheres of activities. According to Dr. Zhao Yuehong, such a practice may be well-meaning aiming at the well-being of old people, but it deprived them of dignity. We should pursue scientific and humanized elderly care with the needs of elder people as the top priority so that they could lead a dignified and quality life in their old age. At the end of the lecture, sharing experiences of her beloved ones in their old age, Dr. Zhao Yuehong once again called on caregivers to put themselves in old people’s shoe instead of having in mind their own convenience. Only by ensuring the dignity of elder people could we enjoy better elderly care when we step into the sunset of our life.  

At the end of the lecture, Professor Feng Hui thanked Dr. Zhao Yuehong for her brilliant speech, pointing out that the nursing career could witness further innovation and development when caregivers with adequate passion for nursing design and carry out nursing care plans from the perspective of their patients.
