At 12:30 pm on September 24 in 2019, host by the Student Work Department of Central South University and the Xiangya School of Nursing of Central South University and organized by the Nursing Branch of the Association of Young Scientists and Technicians of Central South University and the Graduate Association of Xiangya School of Nursing, a lecture series on "Training and Application of NP in USA" was held in Class 714 of Xiaoqian Building at Xiangya New Campus.
The lecture was given by Paula Milone-Nuzzo, Dean and Professor of the College of Nursing at The Pennsylvania State University and the sixth president of the MGH Institute of Health Professions who has made great contributions to home health care, primary care nursing, and care for the elderly. She has given more than 100 lectures both nationally and internationally, consulting extensively for health care and academic organizations in China.
At the beginning of the lecture, by introducing different levels of nursing in America, Professor Milone-Nuzzo brought out different types of nurses, of which she focused on Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) nurses and Advanced Practice Nurses (APN). Required of doctoral degrees, DNP nurses could work as college teachers or academic researchers. As for APN, they need to acquire post-graduate degrees in nursing, working in clinical patient care or as nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetists or nurse midwives. Subsequently, Professor Milone-Nuzzo introduced to the audience the roles and nature of the work of each type of nurses, stressing their scope of responsibilities in improving the clinical outcome of patients by putting patients first. Last but not least, according to Professor Milone-Nuzzo, compared with medical treatment, nursing work treats patients as a whole, which is more beneficial to their physical and mental recovery.
In the Q&A session, Professor Milone-Nuzzo thought highly of the questions raised by the inquisitive students and offered detailed explanations to each one of them. At the conclusion of the lecture, she hoped that her students could make great achievements in the field of nursing, which still has room for improvement in China.
