Lecture Series of “ Patient Safety and the Role of the Nurse”

At 9am on April 9th of 2019, host by the Student Work Department of Central South University and the Xiangya School of Nursing of Central South University and organized by the Nursing Branch of the Association of Young Scientists and Technicians of Central South University and the Graduate Association of Xiangya School of Nursing, a lecture series of Patient Safety and the Role of the Nurse was held in T208 in Fuqing Building at Xiangya new campus.

The presenter, Dr. Mary Foley, is a clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing and the Director of the Center for Nursing Research and Innovation. Mary has worked with the Collaborative Alliance for Nursing Outcomes (CALNOC) since 2004 and is currently a member of the Board of Directors. As a registered nurse for over 40 years, professor Mary Foley continued to teach, and lecture about safe care for workers and patients in many nations and regions in recent years.

At the beginning of the lecture, recounting Nightingale's contributions to nursing safety, Professor Mary Foley introduced the origin of modern nursing, pointing out nurses could make a big difference to patients, families and communities. Professor Mary Foley emphasized that according to health statistics reports issued by the U.S and WHO, medical negligence ranked the third place among factors leading to the death of Americans, which indicated the room for improvement in terms of patient safety measures.

Then, Professor Mary Foley introduced the concept of "patient-centered care", where the quality of nursing and patient safety are the priorities and responsibilities of each member of the health care team. Finally, in sharing her clinical and research experience, Prof. Mary Foley instructed the audience in how to ensure the quality of care and patient safety as a nurse. She highlighted the fact that ideal health care is based on adequate team cooperation with team interactions as an indispensable factor.

In the Q&A session, the students raised their hands to ask questions, which were deemed valuable and thought-provoking in the eye of Professor Mary Foley who gave a detailed explanation to every single one of them. Finally, she hope her audience to remember that they still have a long way to go in improving the quality of care and the safety of patients and that continuous endeavors are needed for the development and innovation of nursing.
