At 4:00 pm on December 5th of 2018, presided over by Professor Feng Hui of our school, a lecture entitled "Bio-banking: Past, Present and Future" was given by Professor Jimmie B. Vaught in Classroom 714 in Xiaoqian Building at Xiangya New Campus.

Professor Jimmie B. Vaught, who got his PhD in biochemistry from the Medical College of Georgia in 1977, has long been engaged in the research and management of Bio-specimen Resources. From 2007 to 2012, he served as the deputy director of National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Bio-repositories and Bio-specimen Research Branch (BBRB) and was hired as a visiting professor by the Central South University in 2017. Masters, PhD students and international students of Xiangya School of Nursing attended the lecture.

With rich experience accumulated in the field of Bio-specimen Resources, Professor Jimmie B. Vaught began the lecture with an introduction of the definition of the Bio-specimen Resources, presenting to the audience the past and present of Bio-specimen Resources and his expectation for its future development. According to Professor Jimmie B. Vaught, in the past, despite its deficiencies and imperfections, Bio-specimen did provide resource support for the prevention of diseases and the pursuit of medical breakthroughs. Later, he pointed out some current development in bio-repositories, such as the use of advanced information systems and automation technology. He also introduced to students the Bio-specimen Research Database(BRD), factors affecting the molecular integrity before and after Bio-specimen acquisition and the evaluation of of Depositories from the perspective of economy. Finally, Professor Jimmie revealed his expectations for the future development of Bio-repositories, hoping to strengthen international collaboration, increase the use of automation in the field of Bio-specimen Resources so as to promote the further development of precision medicine.

During the Q&A session, Professor Jimmie answered the questions raised by the inquisitive students with great patience and earnestness. Such an interaction with the students gave rise to the harmonious ambience of the lecture, which was rounded off with thunderous applause.
