Introduction to Xiangya Hospital of Central South University

Xiangya Hospital of Central South University is a large, comprehensive grade III level A hospital affiliated to Central South University. Located in Changsha, a city with a rich culture and a long history, first built in 1906, founded by Yale-China Association, and initially named Yale-China Hospital, is one of the earliest western hospitals in China. In 1914, Hunan Yuqun Academy and Yale-China Association of the United States co-founded Xiangya Medical Vocational School, which later became Xiangya Medical School, and Yale-China Hospital was renamed Xiangya Hospital.

Xiangya Hospital has a complete set of departments and strong technical power, which makes it a first-rate Chinese hospital in general terms. The hospital has 3500 registered beds, 88 clinical departments and sub-departments, about 5000 medical workers, and has received 2.71 million patients annually in the emergency and outpatient department alone, with a 115 thousand recovered patients being released from hospital and 60 thousand large operations.


The diagnosis and treatment of the hospital is among the best of China. The hospital has zealously advanced its specialty construction and Xiangya Famous Doctor Project, investing 15-20 million every year into the development of departments and technological innovation. In recent years, 25 projects of the hospital has been approved as National key clinical specialty construction projects, ranking the 5th in China. Currently it is responsible for 9 nationally important medical journals as editors in chief. There are 6 national key disciplines of the Ministry of Education, 5 national-level scientific research platforms, 1 national-level clinical medical research center, and 24 provincial-level key laboratories and research centers.


It has leading education and teaching in the country. There is 1 national-level famous teacher and 4 courses have been labeled as national-level excellent resource sharing courses. From 2012 to 2015, Xiangya students won the highest award in the finals of the National College Students' Clinical Skills Competition- Special Prize for four consecutive years. With "zero errors", it successfully hosted the final of the 4th National Clinical Skills Competition for Higher Medical College Students. The teaching and scientific research building with an international standard of 70,000 square meters has also started.


The comprehensive scientific research has been one of the leaders of Chinas hospitals. From 2011 to 2015, the hospital won a total of 1,619 scientific research projects, with a total funding of nearly RMB 387,974,500, of which 335 were awarded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It published 3479 scientific papers, including 1563 SCI papers, a total of 43 national and provincial science and technology achievement awards, and a total of 121 patent authorizations.


The social contribution of public hospitals continues to rise. The hospital vigorously implements the diversified medical development strategy of “going out of Xiangya to run Xiangya”, and is the first to establish a three-level rehabilitation medical service network construction model in China. It is also exploring and establishing the "three aspects integrated into one mode of training rural and community doctors.
