At 12:30 pm on April 22 in 2019, host by the Student Work Department of Central South University and the Xiangya School of Nursing of Central South University and organized by the Nursing Branch of the Association of Young Scientists and Technicians of Central South University and the Graduate Association of Xiangya School of Nursing, the lecture series of “Nursing Practice and Research: A Bridge to Professionalism” was successfully held in Classroom 714 in Xiaoqian Building at Xiangya New Campus.
Chaired by Associate Professor Guo Jia, this lecture was given by Dr. Robin Whittemore, a professor and doctoral tutor at Yale School of Nursing and the current Director of the PhD and Master Program at Yale whose research focus is on lifestyle change to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes as well as the psychosocial adjustment to chronic illness. Up to now, she has published more than 130 SCI papers.
At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Robin Whittemore enlivened the atmosphere by presenting the scenery of Yale University and the impressive landscape she had witnessed in China. Then, recounting her study and work experience in the field of nursing, Professor Robin Whittemore pointed out that patience, critical thinking and the passion for reading are of great importance in one’s study and work. She stressed that nursing is no more than a profession, but also a discipline whose development requires our joint endeavors. According to Professor Robin Whittemore, the discipline of nursing possesses huge potential, in which nurses play a crucial part in the health of patients. She emphasized that research serves as an important foundation for evidence-based nursing practice, which could also contribute to the development of the nursing industry. Using a clinical case as an example, Professor Robin Whittemore described in detail how to introduce clinical problems into nursing research, which could propose solutions for clinical problems.
At the end of the lecture, Professor Robin Whittemore opened floor to questions, encouraging the students to purse further further study and work together to create brighter futures for the discipline of nursing. The lecture was rounded off with rapturous applause.
