The Department of Oral Medicine of Hunan Medical University was established in 1986. In 2002, it was renamed the School of Oral Medicine, Central South University. In 2011, the Institute of Oral Medicine of Central South University was established. In 2012, Central South University approved the establishment of Xiangya Oral Medicine Hospital. The only provincial oral medicine hospital in Hunan Province.

It has undertaken a number of national natural science funds, the science and technology benefit the people program of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the doctoral fund of the Ministry of Education and the provincial and ministerial level research projects.

It has established inter-school (college) cooperation and exchange relations with dental schools in more than ten countries and regions such as the United States, Britain, Denmark, Canada, and Hong Kong.
